19 Asteroid Ditemukan Dalam Semalam

Teleskop Pan-STARRS PS1 berhasil menemukan 19 asteroid dalam waktu semalam. Jumlah ini merupakan rekor baru.

Rekor dicetak teleskop, yang berlokasi di Gunung Api Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii, pada 29 Januari 2011 lalu. "Temuan ini merupakan bukti bahwa PS1 adalah teleskop terbaik untuk studi macam ini," kata Pemimpin proyek PS1 Nick Kaiser dari University of Hawaii. 

PS1 yang dilengkapi kamera digital terbesar yang didesain untuk mengambil ratusan foto angkasa tiap malam. Ratusan foto tersebut dibandingkan untuk mengetahui gerakan asteroid. Ilmuwan melacak gerakan asteroid berdasarkan posisi asteroid dengan posisi bintang yang statis.

Pada malam tanggal 29 Januari, sebenarnya PS1 menemukan 30 kandidat asteroid. Namun setelah citra dikirim ke Minor Planet Center dan dianalisis oleh astronom menggunakan teleskop di Mauna Kea Observatories di Hawaii, hanya 19 asteroid saja yang terbukti keberadaannya.

Dua dari 19 asteroid yang ditemukan akan mendekati Bumi dalam waktu relatif dekat, tapi keduanya tidak menimbulkan ancaman serius dalam jangka pendek. Meskipun demikian, para ilmuwan belum dapat memprediksikan hal yang akan terjadi beberapa abad mendatang. Yang pasti, mereka tahu jika hantaman asteroid terjadi, dampaknya pada Bumi akan luar biasa.

Pan-STARS PS1 adalah singkatan dari Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System. Teleskop ini memiliki cermin utara selebar 1,8 meter dan pencitraan digital beresolusi 1400 megapiksel. Teleskop ini didesain secara khusus untuk mencari asteroid yang berpotensi mengancam Bumi.

Manusia Akan Sebabkan Kepunahan Massal Berikutnya

Kepunahan massal keenam disebabkan oleh manusia. Demikian sebut sebuah artikel dalam jurnal ilmiah Nature.

Setelah terjadi 5 kepunahan massal dalam 540 juta tahun terakhir, kepunahan massal berikutnya--diperkirakan akan terjadi sekitar 3 hingga 22 abad lagi--disebabkan oleh manusia. Kepunahan ini disebabkan penggerusan habitat, perburuan berlebihan, penyebaran kuman dan virus, serta perubahan iklim akibat efek rumah kaca akibat bahan bakar minyak.

Sebelum ekspansi manusia sekitar 500 tahun yang lalu, kepunahan mamalia sangat jarang. Lajunya hanya 2 spesies setiap jutaan tahun. Dalam 5 abad terakhir, setidaknya ada 80 dari 5.570 spesies mamalia menghilang. Banyak juga mamalia yang berstatus "sangat terancam" dan "terancam" dalam daftar keanekaragaman milik International Union for Conservation of Nature.

"Kepunahan sudah dimulai. Tapi juga berarti kita punya kesempatan menyelamatkan banyak spesies," kata Barnosky. Makanya, Barnosky menyebutkan pentingnya manusia melakukan konservasi. "Atau kita akan jadi spesies yang menyebabkan kepunahan massal," katanya.

Kelima kepunahan massal yang sudah terjadi disebabkan oleh kejadian alam. Peristiwa kepunahan yang terjadi paling mendadak adalah di akhir zaman Cretaceous, sekitar 65 juta tahun yang lalu ketika asteroid menubruk semenanjung Yucatan dan menyebabkan debu menyelimuti dan mendinginkan planet. Diperkirakan 76 persen spesies punah, termasuk dinosaurus.

Para peneliti mengakui masih ada kelemahan dalam studi. Mereka menyebutkan kalau fosil yang ditemukan jauh dari lengkap dan mamalia belum tentu menyediakan informasi yang mewakili keanekaragaman Bumi. Masih banyak pekerjaan yang harus mereka lakukan untuk membuktikan teori mereka.

Sejauh ini, ilmuwan telah berhasil mengenali 1,9 juta spesies. Setiap tahun, mereka berhasil menemukan 16.000 hingga 18.000 spesies baru. "Tapi, dengan laju kepunahan seperti sekarang, pada akhir abad ini, separuh spesies yang sudah dikenali akan hilang, khususnya di hutan tropis dan terumbu karang," kata ahli biologi asal Prancis Gilles Beouf yang juga presiden Museum of Natural History, Paris.
